On 2nd November 2015, the German Embassy in Malta held two events on sustainable tourism in Valletta and Gozo, in co-operation with the German-Maltese Business Council of the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise & Industry and the Ministry for Gozo and with the support of the German Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (ifa). The conference in Malta was opened by the Hon Leo Brincat, Minister for Sustainable Development, the Environment and Climate Change. Hon Dr Anton Refalo, Minister for Gozo, participated actively at the conference at Gozo.
Ms Simone Tress from the ecological hotel ROSE in Baden-Württemberg was invited as a key note speaker from Germany. Ms Tress explained how the family business developed from a Demeter- farm to a medium-sized business with its own hotel, various venues and a production facility for organic food. She convincingly depicted the company’s business philosophy while stressing the importance of sustainable tourism for the company.
Mr Ulrich Rüter, Director General of the German Tourism Board Office (DTZ) in Milan gave two presentations as well. He explained the concept of sustainable tourism, the conflicting fields of economy and ecology, its importance for Germany and the advertising campaign of the German Tourism Board in this regard and designated future prospects. The programme was rounded off by high-ranking speakers from Malta and Gozo.
