Minister of State Roth and State Secretary Désir celebrate a French-German Day in Malta

On 23 January 2017, Hon Michael Roth, Minister of State for Europe at the German Foreign Office, travelled to Malta to participate in the General Affairs Council informal meeting of the European Union. To celebrate a French-German Day, Hon Michael Roth and his French counterpart, Mr Harlem Désir, Minister of State for European Affairs at the French Quay d’Orsay, took part in a programme together in Malta on the brink of the EU conference.

A joint meeting with Prime Minister Hon Joseph Muscat and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for European Affairs, Hon Louis Grech, was set to inform both guests about the priorities of the Maltese EU-Presidency.

At the European Asylum Support Office (EASO), its Executive Director, Mr Jose Carreira, and other employees some of which had been posted to hotspots in Italy and Greece, explained the current refugee situation and the necessity to cooperate closer at European level.

During a visit to the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies of the University of Malta (MEDAC), where the German Foreign Office finances the German Chair in Peace and Conflict Studies, both Ministers of State discussed some European and global issues with the students originating from Algeria, China, Egypt, the Gambia, Georgia, Ghana, Jordan, Libya, Malta, the Netherlands, the Palestinian Territories, Tanzania, UK, Ukraine and the USA.
